Summary: Compared with the traditional intermittent reverse-flame kiln, the tunnel kiln offers a number of advantages: 1. Continuous production, short cycle times, high output, and superior product quality. 2. It operates on the countercurrent principle, resulting in high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. Thanks to excellent heat retention and effective utilization of waste heat, fuel consumption is significantly reduced—by about 50–60% compared with the reverse-flame kiln. 3. The firing cycle is substantially shortened: whereas a conventional large kiln typically requires 3–5 days from loading to unloading, a tunnel kiln can complete the process in approximately 20 hours. 4. Labor savings: not only is operation during firing straightforward, but loading and unloading are also performed outside the kiln, which is convenient, improves working conditions for operators, and reduces physical strain. 5. Improved product quality: the temperatures in the preheating, firing, and cooling zones are consistently maintained within specified ranges, making it easier to control the firing process and thereby enhancing product quality while reducing breakage rates. 6. Long service life of both the kiln and its refractory lining: since the interior of the kiln is not subjected to rapid temperature fluctuations, the kiln structure enjoys a long operational lifespan, typically requiring maintenance only every 5–7 years. However, the construction of a tunnel kiln demands substantial quantities of materials and equipment, leading to a relatively high initial capital investment. Moreover, as a continuous-firing kiln, its firing schedule cannot be altered arbitrarily; it is best suited for high-volume production of products with largely uniform firing requirements, thus exhibiting limited flexibility.
Compared with the traditional batch-updraft kiln, the tunnel kiln offers a range of advantages.

2. It operates on the counterflow principle, resulting in high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. Thanks to excellent heat retention and effective recovery of waste heat, fuel consumption is significantly reduced—by approximately 50–60% compared with down-draft kilns.
3. The firing time is significantly shortened: whereas a conventional large kiln typically requires 3–5 days from loading to emptying, a tunnel kiln can complete the process in about 20 hours.
4. Labor-saving. Not only is operation during firing simple, but loading and unloading the kiln are also carried out outside the kiln, which is highly convenient, improves working conditions for operators, and reduces labor intensity.
5. Improved quality. The temperatures in the preheating zone, firing zone, and cooling zone are typically maintained within a specific range, making it easier to control the firing process and resulting in better product quality and a lower breakage rate.
6. Both the kiln and its kiln furniture are highly durable. Since the interior of the kiln is not subjected to rapid heating or cooling, the kiln structure has a long service life and typically requires maintenance only every 5 to 7 years.
However, tunnel kilns require a large quantity of materials and equipment, resulting in a substantial initial investment. As they are continuous firing kilns, the firing schedule should not be altered arbitrarily; they are generally suitable only for high-volume production of products with essentially uniform firing requirements, offering limited flexibility.
